Software Reviews of Ubuntu 8.04 [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Great Alternative to the Windows mess I'm tired of
Summary: 4 Stars

I loved the switch to this GNU/Linux distribution! I have been wanting to do it for years because I'm tired of all the money spent on keeping a Microsoft operating system running well. I would have never thought so many great programs would be available for free and I am glad I did it. This version worked well on my older desktop, for my new laptop I had to go with the newer version (9.04). I am doing everything I did on my old one without ever having to type a command line entry. By the way, because this version didn't work on my newer laptop I gave this 4 stars but it probably deserves 5! Best of all, the real test of substance here. A few weeks back a group leader of mine sent out a newsletter with a couple of Word attachments made & saved from Microsoft Word, distributed by Gmail, out of everybody in the group I was the only one who could open, print (in color), and save the attachments all within the Open Office word processor program, which came free bundled in. When was the last time your free (legal) copy of Microsoft XP or Vista came with free (not trial) versions of Microsoft Word or any other piece of the Microsoft Office suite?!

Customer Review: Excellent Linux distro
Summary: 5 Stars

This Debian/Gnu based distribution is very useful.

The aptitude package base is ample.

There is plenty of online documentation and
a large user base. Check out ubuntuforums.org

opensshd, crond, rsyncd, smbd, sbackupd, ntpd, ddclient are just
some of the excellent packages available

bash, iptables and udev (default in Linux) are wonderful
specialty tools.

Some advice (gotchas) for expert users from personal experience:

- Beware of editing /etc/apt/sources.list
Using experimental repositories can lead to trouble.

- Each verison of Ubuntu is dependent on
a particular python version. Installing
a different python version (make from tar.gz file)
leads to trouble. Though Debian based, there is no
"/usr/share/python/debian_defaults" file.

- I tend to use the LTS versions (long term support)
This way I'm not always upgrading (do not get
stuck in upgrade mode -- spend more time with your kids)

- Though I use sbackupd, the default /etc/sbackup.conf
file excludes music and movie files, /home hidden
(i.e. .bashrc) files and files over 100,000,000 bytes
(100 MB) I had to change this as my personal backup
needs are different.

- It's a good idea to install your CPU specific
kernel image (i.e. sudo apt-get install linux-686)

- The enforced sudo usage can be annoying.
You can always "sudo passwd root"
and "su" to bypass sudo. Beware of using
rm as root. Mistyping "rm -rf /" as superuser
WILL wipe out your system.

- Use the desktop distro (I found the server version to
be a hassle). This means there is less support and some of
the boilerplate online howtos/solutions will not work.

Wants:

- It would be nice if the sbackup utility included a
"Purge backups older than n days" option. For now,
I roll my own.

Customer Review: Ubuntu for Linux
Summary: 5 Stars

This CD was an excellent way to get started with Ubuntu. (I highly recommend Ubuntu as a well rounded Linux operating system distribution. It is well supported with LOTS of software available on the internet (for free) to meet your needs) While Ubuntu can be downloaded from the internet for free, I found that even with DSL it was going to take several hours. Once installed, updates are easy to get and install. This item was shipped and delivered in a very timely manner.

Customer Review: No Windows
Summary: 5 Stars

Works great and is a lot more user friendly than the last version of SUSE linux that I tried.
