Software Reviews of Family Tree Maker 2008 Platinum [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Family Tree Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

Without a doubt a very easy product to navigate. I love the idea that I can add commentary and pictures to my ancestors profiles.

Customer Review: FTM 16 to FTM 2008
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought Family Tree Maker when it first came out and was sold immediately. I have updated each time there was a newer one and was always impressed with how easily and well the files transferred to the next version. The same is true when moving files to FTM 2008 from FTM 16, but the file extensions change, making a "downward" move impossible if you want to open your file in FTM 16 as well. I have gotten around that by exporting the file as a GED and then reconverting it to FTM 16, but it's a bit clumsy and I fear I may lose something in the process.

I bought the Platinum version and have enjoyed the extras that came with it, especially the 6 month subscription to [...] and the maps and postcard CDs.

On my laptop, the new FTM 2008 is a bit slow to open and the screen size makes it a bit harder to read. I find the larger size type and the plainer fonts easier to see on FTM 16. I find the merging feature and [...] screens are the same, except, for some reason, I can't get the "cut and paste" feature to work on 2008, so if I want to copy something, I have to paste it to Wordpad or something to hold it until I can get the notes page open. Some of the features have taken some getting used to, although it all seems very updated. The merging feature has sped up the process of gathering information from the internet. [...], especially, has a wealth of data. The media folders do seem to hold a lot of data and it is easy to get to them.

All in all, I like 2008 as well as 16. I'd certainly recommend updating to FML 16 or 2008 if you are working with an earlier version.

Customer Review: Leave well enough alone
Summary: 1 Stars

My husband and I were absolutely disgusted with FMT V17 Platinum. It is totally not user friendly and has done away with quite a lot of the information we had collected previously and transferred to the new system. We lost our reference numbers, our Also Known As (AKA), which were in lineage, just to name two. There was no Genealogy Report and several other were also missing. Notes are confusing if you don't watch were you are you can easily make a mistake. We are definitely going back to the original version of FMT. Designers take note we won't be buying any new versions until you correct the FMT V17 and make it much more user friendly and similar to the previous versions in the way it displays records and information.

Customer Review: Not thrilled with new product
Summary: 2 Stars

I have to agree with others. There are some ok features in this version but I find using the older version is much more practical. I think I'll buy version 16 and work from there instead of this one.

Customer Review: Software is SLOOOOWWW
Summary: 1 Stars

While there are some things I do like about this version, and things I did not like about the previous version 16, be aware that the sofware is extremely SLLLOOOWWW and is a memory and CPU hog. You can no longer search for a married woman by her married surname, there is no Family Sheet, etc.
I'm not getting any corruption errors like previous versions, and there are features I do like, but the speed, or lack thereof, will drive you nuts!
