Software Reviews of Typing Instructor Deluxe 17Customer Review: Perfect for my kids! Very FUN! Summary: 5 StarsThis is a fantastic keyboard trainer for any age. I bought it for my kids, 8 and 10, and they love it. It is very user friendly. I played a couple of the 'games' and thought they were interesting and fun. It keeps up with your lessons, and lets you know your strengths and weaknesses. I recommend it for kids of any age.
Customer Review: poorly done Summary: 1 StarsWhat you're looking at is basically a complicated Flash program.
I don't think it's very well done. Occasionally at my school I get stuck teaching typing, and this is the program we use. After having had to answer questions about how it works for a few years, I can tell you this: it's full of bugs. Either it was hastily programmed or poorly tested. But these people don't have much of an excuse since the thing is currently in its 18th incarnation!
A few examples:
1. On the version we have when you finish an activity and select "repeat last activity," the program doesn't. Instead it moves you on to the next activity.
2. Also, when you accomplish your goal, the screen changes to an "Awesome!" splash screen, from which, believe it or not, it is impossible to exit without crashing the program to desktop.
3. You have the option to have two spaces or one spaces after each full stop, but many of the game's activities and tests won't remember this, and revert to one space regardless of what you do.
4. Some of the special characters lessons will cause the program to bug out.
5. You know how when you type, if you use left shift for a capital W, say, this is a bad habit? Amazingly, this program doesn't have an option to turn off the nearby shift key, something that would force you to acquire proper habits when it comes to the shift keys.
They would also have done well to add more material to the tests and lessons. As it is, you can't take the "long sentences" or "expert touch typist" tests without typing the same tripe over and over again. Heck, it's just text: they should have had hundreds and thousands of pages of material available, so the user never gets bored by seeing the same ol' stuff over and over again. But they seem to only have a few paragraphs of material, which is not even very interesting to begin with.
I would recommend getting Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 9.0. This is apparently the most popular one on the market, and those I know who use the Mavis Beacon don't have anywhere near the number of complaints that I have about "Typing Instructor Deluxe."
Customer Review: Essential tool for keyboard dominance Summary: 5 StarsI've never owned any other typing instructing software prior to the TI deluxe, so I can't really rate it relative to anything else. What I can say is that this program delivered tangible results in a matter of days; my WPM increased from a meekly 20 WPM to 54 WPM in a week and a half. Follow the lessons, and you'll be well on your way to becoming a master typist.
Thanks to the Typing Instructor, I can now type reviews like these without squandering my precious time away squinting at every key. Have Fun!
Update:::
It's December. I can type 103 WPM. Nuff' said.
Customer Review: Boring Summary: 2 StarsBoring, extremely poor design as software ;
free ones on internet are much better
Customer Review: Helpful! Summary: 5 StarsI ordered this product in order to refresh my 20 year old typing skills. I am finding it very helpful in this. The lesson plans are good for working on particular deficiencies in my skills. And, I like the magazine articles for the practical practice that they give me. I don't like the arcade area as much, with the typing games. It is probably fine for kids and for beginners though. I just find the other areas more useful to me.
