Customer Review: MUCH better than Norton -- bit of a resource hog

When you are choosing your anti-virus/internet security suite, you can either go with Norton or McAfee -- both with relatively hefty pricetags but supposedly the 'gold standard' or you can go with "shareware solutions" such as Avira and AVG. Kaspersky has positioned itself as somewhere in the middle.

I ditched Norton because of the hefty pricetag and the fact that it very noticeably slows down my system. It is very intrusive and you feel like they are blackmailing you by having to "feed the meter" every year. I've tried McAfee but found it bogged down my system even worse than Norton. Also, the interface on McAfee is not nearly as good as Norton's.

I've been using a combination of Avira Premium and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (both paid versions) and have been satisfied with the level of protection (though, again, how do you know if your virus protection is really working?)

I decided to try the Kaspersky Internet Security Solution because I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 subscription Package (80014H) Category: Antivirus Software running on my son's computer and it seems to work very well -- especially considering he goes to a lot of "questionable" game websites that are famous for downloading spyware.

Installation on both Vista and XP systems went very smoothly -- I didn't have any problems installing under either system. The interface was familiar to me and comparable to the plain Antivirus version.

In using it, it seems to be slow down internet activities -- which you would expect since it bills itself as a full Internet Sercurity solution as opposed to simply an Antivirus.

Things I like:

1. The Security Analyzer function keeps track of security patches for applications other than windows. I have not seen this feature in the other security solutions that I have seen.

2. SafeRun -- the ability to run applications or a browser in an "isolated" sandbox environment -- Often with Avira, it will warn that certain websites are "not safe" even though they are supposedly benign educational websites and you really want to know if they are right... this gives you the ability to test the website without risking the integrity of your system.

The price of Kaspersky is comparable to the premium versions of AVG or Avira. The relatively slow-down in browser activities is a bit annoying but tolerable given the extra features associated with this software. It still is much much better than Norton or McAfee.

All in all, I'll stick with this solution for awhile. It has some features you won't find in other suites and the price is reasonable for the level of protection you have available.
