Software Reviews of Nero 9 [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Wouldn't be a terrible product if more of it actually worked. Summary: 1 Stars
One thing I can say for this product is that it is comprehensive--too much so--better to do a few things well than to do nothing well. It is not entirely fair to say Nero 9 does nothing well; in my case at least it installed OK and performs basic disc-burning functions. While it is true that it cannot play Blu-ray discs, it can create them, sort of. It creates a basic type of disc with an austere list-type menu--a disc that is supposed to be editable, although I have yet to find a way to do anything with them but erase them and start over.
The Blu-ray creation function is not integrated into the product but consists of a few limited routines buried deep inside the menus. Now, it happens that there are very few consumer software products that can burn Blu-ray discs at all, and even fewer that provide editing facilities for the creation of Blu-ray movies; however, there is a product that works better: TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4. At first glance the latter product appears to be much more limited than Nero 9; and that might be the case if Nero 9 actually worked; but consider this example: TMPGEnc Authoring Works lacks the ability to superimpose titles (text) onto video, while Nero purports to provide a couple dozen ways to add titling. The trouble is that even the most basic of titles do not work in Nero 9's Nero Vision; one of maybe a couple out of the entire two dozen that do work is a whimsical bouncing-letters thing that is far too gimmicky than one would want except for a comedy video; TMPGEnc on the other hand, even though it does not support titles, does support subtitles (which are really intended as close-captioning or translations for viewers who do not speak the language spoken in the video). The trouble with that is that the viewer may have to explicitly select subtitles in order to see them, while the author may wish to make them appear regardless. Still, that's better than Nero, which can't provide anything but the silliest of titling schemes. This failing of Nero applies to the editing of all discs, not just Blu-ray.
Another example of where the generally bare-bones capabilities of TMPGEnc Authoring Works actually exceeds that of the bloated Nero 9 is that, in addition to the subtitling function already mentioned, it provides for the authoring of pop-up menus, a feature unique to Blu-ray.
Another aspect of video capture from HD (HDV tape) camcorders in which Nero 9 is inferior to TMPGEnc (and possibly others--but, as stated above, there seem to be *very* few consumer products that support HD video capture & editing) is that the video is not captured in smooth motion--although it reports capturing 29.97 fps, it has the slightly jerky quality of a lower frame-capture rate. (It's not a terrible flaw, and it's less noticeable than what one sees in Internet streaming, or even some cable-television HD transmissions.) TMPGEnc does not have this problem at all, however, capturing video that looks identical to the original.
I could find no convenient way to load a previous project if I had already loaded Nero Vision first; however, I could cause a saved project to load by finding it in Windows Explorer and double-clicking it, which of course causes Nero Vision to load itself and the project file.
The only other product of this type with which I have much experience is Pinnacle System's Studio 8, which is not great but is somewhat tolerable. As far as I could determine, the latest version of Studio (11, I think) does not support Blu-ray. I also briefly tried Cyberlink's product, but it crashed so much as to be worthless. (Cyberlink's PowerDVD does play Blu-rays quite well, however.) If my reading of the various forums relating to software for editing and burning video is any indication, all the mainstream consumer products are pretty awful; and it appears that Nero 9 may be one of the worst of a bad lot.
Most of my comments have dealt with Nero Vision, its video editor and movie maker; but another part of the suite shows an additional example of the sloppiness of Nero's code: LightScribe, if invoked from Nero Express within Nero 9, does not inscribe the image as shown in its preview function (at least not if a previously created label image file has been loaded); and unless the user figures out that (s)he has to change out of the default format, only a thin sliver of the label will be burned onto the LightScribe surface. The Nero 9 suite is a massive compilation of programs, many of which I have not tried; who knows how many more inexcusable bugs lie in wait to bite me.
Otherwise, unless and until the mainstream video-editing products get their act together, I would suggest the relatively austere TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 product, which provides basic DVD, DivX, and Blu-ray authoring and burning as well as capture from DV/HDV camcorders. I have no financial or other interest in Pegasys's TMPGEnc products; but I feel that as I add to the chorus of damnation of Nero and similar products I should at least suggest to the reader a workable alternative.
Summing up Nero 9, I would describe it as a product released to the public in pre-beta condition (where it remains as of this May 2009 review). The product, even the download version, ships without its help files, which is another indication that the product was shipped before it was finished (developers, the job isn't finished until the paperwork is done!). Of course, with the product's having shipped in such an unfinished state, it would have been risky to have published final information on how one is actually supposed to use it. One can download most of the help material in a single file, or as separate files for each sub-product if one prefers. The help material for two or three of the sub-products is not available in the single-file download and thus must be downloaded individually. I think that if critical editing functions in Nero Vision were made to actually work, and if the various internals problems that have caused PC crashes and/or memory leakage were corrected, and if the ever-growing list of faulty applications imbedded in it could be cleaned up, Nero 9 could be a terrific product; and I would not complain about it's trying to do too many different things if it were in fact able to do them well. Right now, though, it has a long way to go.
