I have used both parallels 4 and vmware 2. Overall, for XP, the vm behavior shows greater responsivity and compatibility with parallels. Interestingly, vmware appears to work better with ubuntu.Customer Review: It works as promised

When I opened the box and saw the huge manual I was pretty frightened. I'm much more of a hands on person so I just put the manual aside and threw the disk into my MacBook. It got hung up on the first try installing it, but went smoothly the second time. I'm not a very computer literate person, so if this needed to be configured or anything I was pretty screwed. I had already partitioned the hard-drive before and installed XP on the other side of Leopard. I thought this program was just going to allow me to go back and forth between those two. Unfortunately, that is not how this program works. You have to reload the XP software into the Parallels program. If there is another way to do it I'm not going to bother reading the encyclopedia that it comes with to find out how.
Once I had all my programs loaded on the XP it worked like a charm. I wish I bought this program a year ago when I got my new MacBook. [...]. This is a must buy for that price.

it only works if you have all the other microsoft software installed via a portable hard drive like office. now i see why i love my mac more and more everyday. Windows is so 80's. i tried it and i don't like it.

Customer Review: Buy Parallels -- Not VMWare Fusion!

Parallels fixed some major software issues I was having with my MacBook and Snow Leopard 10.6. Prior to installing Parallels, I was using VMWare Fusion. It worked OK with Mac OS Leopard 10.5, but problems started after upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6. After installing Snow Loepard 10.6 performance went down running Windows Vista. Sometimes my Windows Vista session would freeze for minutes before coming back. The mouse was also very erratic. It would freeze 6 or more times an hour. I would have to get the pointer back to the Mac desktop and then back to the Vista desktop to work. My fix to this problem was to dump VMWare Fusion and switch to Parallels instead. I downloaded the free trial from Parallels and it fixed the problems I was having and drastically improved performance. It took me an hour or more to convert my VMWare Fusion image to Parallels, but it was worth the effort. I have now purchased Parallels and have been using it for five days now and everything works great.
