Software Reviews of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 StandardCustomer Review: Lets me work again! Summary: 5 StarsFor the past year, I've struggled with a muscular disorder that made typing so uncomfortable, I couldn't work. I do genealogical research for a living, so preparing client reports became impossible. This program has put me back to work! It's very user friendly, and within about ten minutes, I was up and running again. It scanned all my documents to examine my writing style and make adjustments to the vocabulary. Training it was a breeze, and the help files are actually helpful! I highly recommend this program.
Customer Review: Dragon Naturally Speaking is just that.....naturally speaking without touching a keyboard! Summary: 4 StarsSpelling is not my husband's strong suit, so I got this for him so he could still do emails and things on the computer. He loves the fact that he can open a new mail and send it with voice commands. He is happily emailing every day now. I also use it for dictating into my diary and preparing documents by dictating, while freeing my hands up to do other things. I would highly recommend this product. It was easy to load and very user friendly to use.
Customer Review: DNS quit working with MS Word Summary: 1 StarsI used Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.1 preferred for a while with no problems. I have windows 7. A few weeks ago it quit working with MS Word. It now sees MS Word 2007 as a nonstandard application and dictation does not work. My 90 day complimentary tech support has expired and I don't feel like paying them. Others have reported this problem but there is no fix or mention in the Nuance site. Considering how many people use MS Word I would hesitate buying this product.
Customer Review: little if any improvement over version 9 Summary: 2 StarsI use this product a lot because of major issues I have with RSI injuries. (let's just say I wish I had carpal tunnel and could just had surgery). It's been a blessing to me, but I do have this laundry list of complaints:
it may be a little bit faster, but it misses the first parts of sentences a lot or makes up the beginnings of phrases. It still frequently gets spaces wrong between words. Still often doesn't respond to keyboard input in the correction menu and doesn't seem to have any bias towards hearing "choose" in those menus versus something like "shoes" or some other word.
it really doesn't seem to learn the words even after I train or correct them. I don't get a sense that anything is being corrected when I say "correct _____". it still can't figure out the difference between a keypress and me talking if I have the microphone a little bit too close to the keyboard- which I find kind of odd that that can't be programmed.
Also it sometimes recognizes words in the little blue box, but it doesn't put them in the window. I don't know what's up with that. Also winning director word- (okay I just tried to correct that, selected "choose one" and it didn't correct it or change it to what the menu offered). Also when I correct a word and it makes the correction I have to use the keypad to get the cursor back to where it was when I left off. (which by the way 90% of the time is not the end of the document, so saying "go to the end" doesn't work for me).
sometimes I'm correcting the word or phrase and I have a feeling that internally it's associating the wrong sounds with the wrong vowels or parts of words and I think maybe that's part of the reason why after a certain point the recognition can get worse, so I'll start over occasionally.
I've used this product quite a bit and if I know what I'm saying or reading something that works decently enough. But if I'm typing an e-mail and thinking as I go along and using the keyboard to put in spaces and fix things or just type words that I know it's not going to get it's pretty cumbersome. I would like to see some of these strange quirks worked out and I think it could be a good program. I just think it needs an overhaul in its interface, which just feels too constricting. To be fair I probably should give it three stars since it is a fairly remarkable product and has changed the way I often interact with my computer, but the front-end is just not there yet. DNS maybe has been revolutionary in technology, but not in software.
Nuance, if you're out there I have some ideas, but you'll have to hire me as a "consultant". (or maybe just give me lifetime free software :)
Customer Review: I love this product! Summary: 5 StarsI love this product -- it's fantastic. I'm using it now to write this review. I'm an online instructor and it has really helped me with my typing, or lack of. I use it in my e-mails, in Microsoft Word, and while teaching over the Internet. I am surprised at how good is. I tried this product about six years ago and it was average at that time. I've noticed significant improvements in the latest version. It is definitely worth the money. I hardly type anymore!
