Customer Review: If you're buying fusion 2 to get the free fusion 3 upgrade, listen up!

I bought vmware fusion 2 through amazon early October 2009 because of the promise for a free upgrade to version 3. After installing the app, I registered it on vmware's site to which it congratulated me for registering VERSION 1.0!!! The box said fusion 2, the serial key on the CD sleeve read "VMware fusion-Mac 2.0 Retail", yet I was somehow stuck being registered with VMware fusion version 1.0! Of course, version 1 offers no free upgrade path to V3, so I had to email vmware support telling them my situation. Their response was quick (within one business day), and the response told me my copy of fusion was 'issued' 10/13/2008 and didn't count. Therefore I must return my copy of fusion V1 to the 'Mac store', and purchase a NEW COPY of Fusion 2. Apparently the support rep didn't get the picture I sent in the original support email showing my NEW COPY of VMWARE FUSION 2 in-hand that was just purchased in OCTOBER 2009!!!
So, not getting any real help by vmware's support, I called amazon and told them about my situation. Thankfully, amazon was more understanding of my problem, and allowed me to ship back my copy of fusion 2 as defective. If it weren't for Amazon, I would have been stuck with a version of vmware fusion I didn't really want.
As for how fusion itself works, I was very happy with it. One of the best features I found was the ability to run a Boot Camp partition of Windows on your Mac in Fusion. This is a great feature for anybody that needs the raw power of running Windows native on their Mac when needed, but also have the ability to get into the same copy Windows while in OS-X.

I purchased this from Amazon on Oct 5th, 09 which came with Free upgrade to VMWare Fusion 3. It was a great deal as I got this for little over $25. I am using VMWare fusion for last few years and it is really comparable with Parallels and way better than Bootcamp unless you really want to use the machine as exclusive Window's machine. I like the headless option which takes (I am guessing) way less memory but still gives you all the options to access guest operating system.
Overall great purchase and I am shopping with Amazon for years and I am really satisfied with their deals and services (I know this has to do nothing with product rating.. but still).

I love my Mac. It does everything I need, but Excel (the Excel for Mac is not as robust as the PC version) and run the occasional PC only program.
VMWare Fusion is a great solution for this. I am able to run Windows without switching to bootcamp. It is easy to install and set up. Please be aware that you will have to have a copy of the operating system to install.
One drawback is that it is fairly resource intensive, so I switching back and forth between Windows and the Mac OS causes delays. This is mainly a function of the fact that Windows is so resource intensive and that I am using a MacBook instead of a MacBook Pro. If you are purchasing a new computer, definitely go with the MacBook Pro. The delays only apply when I am toggling back and forth. If I stay in VMWare, then it is quite responsive.

The trial version I downloaded demonstrated lag, and that was version 3.
This is sold supposedly coming with a coupon for the upgrade, which is coming out any day now.. but (without opening it, since it is software) mine didn't have any addendum coupon. The rebates were expired... so it might just be worth it to get V3, if you need to run both without rebooting.

As a former PC use, I find this product doesn't allow me to use all the capabilities of the Windows operating system on the MAC as I could using it directly on a PC. EX. One of my most frequent uses is to download books from the library to my computer for my MP3 player. Many books can't be downloaded with the OSX operating system formatting. So I purchased Fusion and Windows in order to do this. But this software still won't allow me to download the books to my Mac. I had to go to a friends' house who has a PC in order to download the books.
